Alfie McGivern
Alfie’s story shows how opportunity, trust, and support at PTSA transformed a young person from uncertainty into a confident coach, leader, and positive role model for others nationwide.
Alfie’s journey is a powerful example of how opportunity, trust, and support at PTSA can help transform a young person from uncertainty into a confident coach, leader, and role model.
Today, Alfie stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration for young people across London.
He joined PTSA in March 2023 through the Camden Council Pathway — an initiative designed to give young people within the NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) support programme access to paid roles that help them explore future career options.
At the time, Alfie describes himself as “a little lost.” Growing up in care had taken a toll on his confidence, and he was sofa surfing with no stable place to live, relying on friends for somewhere to sleep.
What he needed was a chance — and when PTSA offered to train him as a youth and sports coach, he seized the opportunity wholeheartedly. He committed 35 hours each week to developing what he now calls “a life‑changing skillset.”
“Growing up in care, people often told me I wouldn’t achieve anything,” Alfie explains. “My confidence was low, and there were moments when I genuinely felt useless.
“All of that changed when I joined PTSA. From day one, the support and encouragement I received helped me believe in myself again. In less than a year, I’ve learned so much.
“When I arrived, I struggled to communicate or express myself properly. Now, I’m leading coaching sessions and helping young children find their own voice.
“PTSA will be the place that shapes me. From here, the only direction is up. I’m so grateful to everyone who has supported me.”
